Matted: 23x27 inches The Sevillanas is a group of works inspired by a performance of National Flamenco Dance Festival I saw in Seville, Spain, some years ago. The sinuosity of Flamenco dance, its rhythmic clasps and whipping chanting, were not only exuding sensuality but also transforming the whole performance into an experience of mind state alteration. It reminded me, in some measure, of some holy dance rituals in which the dancers achieve an ecstatic state of trance. Watching that dance, I realized that the path that would lead to that potential psychological transformation was actually being invisibly drawn on the stage by the lines the dancer’s feet were making on the floor, which were creating patterns. So when I returned to my studio, I tried to convey this experience by painting lines of liquid gold leaf on paper, recreating the swirling sensation of that energetic flamenco dance. Also, I chose to paint with liquid gold leaf as an artistic reference to the Spanish art, since gold is a characteristic color of the “mudejar” style, - a blend of Arabic and Christian elements that emerged as an architectural style in the 12th century.
